Iran backtracks on pledge to restart nuclear enrichment activities in days
Iran-European Union, Politics, 5/26/2005
Iran in its meetings with the Europeans yesterday has backtracked from many statements it made recently assuring that would restart Uranium enrichment for its peaceful energy needs, The New York Times reported today.
Iran had repeatedly asserted that will start the enrichment process within "days" since this was its undisputable right under the NPT treaty.
It is not clear if this recently development is true, that it would mean, in effect, that Iran has conceded that it does not have a right to such an industrial enrichment process. The US is seeking to prevent and delay Iran acquiring such capabilities.
The US has threatened to take Iran to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions. Some see the US-European tactics of delaying Iran's restart of its enrichment process, as giving enough time for the US to gain additional leverage against Iran, with the assumption that as Iraq and Afghanistan are further stabilized, Iran will loose a major lever it has against the United States, where the US seeks Iran's support for such stability.
It is not clear if by accepting such delays, Iran has defacto given ligitimacy to the US and European basis of the negotiations, which is that Uranium enrichment by Iran is subject to negotiations, and is not a right that Iran has.
