Morocco, Politics, 5/26/2005

Morocco has engaged in a process of political, economic and social reforms to reach sustainable human development, said, Wednesday, minister-delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of General and Economic Affairs, Rachid Talbi Alami.

Speaking at the ongoing 6th Global Forum on Reinventing Government (May 24-27) in South Korea, he said that Morocco has embarked on various reforms to reinvent its governance structures and public administration, noting that these reforms have been started in the eighties.

Morocco has embarked on a large operation to privatise several state companies and to cede or delegate commercial services to private sector while taking into consideration social aspects and investors interest, he noted.

The minister pointed out that reforms aim at ensuring fair competition, transparency, equal opportunities, a well organised network of distribution and a strong administration to serve stakeholders.

The kingdom works also on regulating the market to avoid monopoly. Thus it created The National Council of Fair Competition along with two other regulating bodies, ANRT and HACA, respectively for telecommunication and the mass media sectors.

The minister briefed also the forum on the economic opportunities the kingdom offers, notably free market access and favourable environment as the North African country adopted new laws to ensure fair dealing and offer same treatment and avoid discrimination, so that local and international firms can compete, he said.

He also cited other reforms, notably the creation of administrative and commercial courts, the reinforcement of the Supreme Auditing Court, promulgation of the Family Code, protection of the intellectual and industrial property.

The 6th Global Forum on Reinventing Government features a number of important events relating to the five year review of the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
