Rise of the octopus fishing quantity
Morocco, Economics, 5/26/2005
The ceiling of octopus fishing will be raised to 25,000 tons, said here Wednesday the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Mohand Laenser.
Answering the question of two parties, the minister said this increase is due to the biological fishing indicator which revealed a remarkable improvement in octopus reserves.
He said that technical and socio-economic measures have been taken by the ministry to speed up the exploitation of the traditional fisheries part of the octopus, which is set at 6,500 tons.
The Moroccan Office of Fisheries (ONP) had earlier announced that the country's production of coastal and traditional fisheries increased by 17% with a value estimated at MAD 672.165m (Euro 62m) in the first quarter of 2005 compared to the MAD 576.838 (Euro 52.5m) in the same period of 2004
