Abbas seeks US support to the Palestinian state, Sharon maneuvers
Palestine-USA, Politics, 5/26/2005
Staring his visit to the USA, the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for the American commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Abbas, who arrived in Washington in his first visit to the White House since his election by the beginning of the current year, said he seeks to get a clear American political position in order to implement the Roadmap and provide economic support for the Palestinians.
In statements in Ramullah before leaving for the USA on Tuesday, Abbas said he will demand the US administration to carry out its duty concerning the peace process and not to give assurances to Israel at the expense of the last phase negotiations which have not been concluded. Palestinian officials said that Mahmoud Abbas will inform the American president George W. Bush his fears over the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza by the mid of next August, and will ask him for confirmations to that this will not affect the final status of the West Bank and Gaza.
It is also expected that Abbas will propose to Bush maps explaining the settlements activity expansion in the West Bank including East Jerusalem. This is a violation to the Roadmap which is supported by Washington and shows that the wall of separation which passes through the West Bank endangers Bush's vision for the establishment of two states.
