Washington criticizes Damascus decision to cut military and intelligence relations with it
Syria-USA, Politics, 5/25/2005
The US defense department denied knowing about a change in the relations with Syria following statements made by Damascus's ambassador to Washington Imad Mustafa of cutting all relations with the American army and intelligence.
The spokesman for the Pentagon Brian Wittman said that all senior American officials consider that Syria "has and should do more," in remarks to preventing foreigners from sneaking to Iraq through the Syrian borders.
Meantime, the spokesman for the US Department Of State Richard Boucher described statements of ambassador Mustafa as a step in the wrong direction, noting simultaneously that any Syrian cooperation was "small and irregular." Boucher recounted the list of accusations addressed to Syria including its weak measures in support of Iraqi armed men and organizations which oppose the Israeli- Palestinian peace operation.
In a statement, the Syrian embassy in Washington stressed that talking about Damascus's halting its military and intelligence cooperation with the US is not a result of a Syrian decision taken recently, rather it is a "description of the current status," noting that halting cooperation comes because of what it described the absence of the real will in Washington to solve difficulties between the two sides.
