Thousands of Syrians liberated from illiteracy in 2004

Director of Education for Adults Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sahar Omran, stressed that working in the field of illiteracy eradication continues, asserting that her ministry achieved progress in this regard.

Omran said in statements published Tuesday in 'al-Thawra' daily newspaper that the rate of illiteracy decreased to 18% in the 2002 from 60% in 1960.

She pointed out that working on implementing the motto 'Education for All' the Department held courses for illiteracy eradication, particularly for girls.

Ms. Omran said the number of classes opened in 2004 exceeded 2844, and the number of male students reached 22255 and 36375 females. Those liberated from illiteracy reached 10967 of the males and 23975 females whereas the total is 34942 for 2004.

She added that in cooperation with UN World Food Program ( WFP) her Department concentrates on the girls in the urban through opening 750 courses for illiteracy eradication every year.
