Syria, Politics, 5/25/2005
The Syrian security forces detained on Tuesday at dawn in Damascus all members of the Atasi forum for national dialogue which was the only forum which organizes political seminars.
The human rights activist lawyer Anwar al-Bunni said that among the detainees is the chairperson of the forum Suheir al-Atasi, writer Hussein al-Oudat, who was running the seminars, noting that the other detainees were Nahid Badaweyah, Hazem al-nahar, Jihad Msouti, Muhammad Mahfouz, Abdul Naser Kalhous and Youssef al-Jahmani.
The research and legal studies center which is led by the two lawyers al-Bunni and Khalil al-Matouk deplored the detention operation.
On the other hand, the Arab human rights committee in Paris decided altogether with other Syrian and Arab organizations to dispatch a delegation to Geneva, Strasburg and Brussels to inform the human rights commission on the conditions of detainees in Syria.
The Syrian authorities detained last week the writer and human rights activist Ali Abdullah after he had delivered a speech in the name of the banned Muslim Brothers group at al-Atasi forum on may 7th. Several days later, the chairman of the Arab human rights organization Muhammad Radoun was detained in Lattakia to the north west of the capital Damascus.
