New Israeli ambassador arrives in Cairo
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 5/24/2005

The new Israeli ambassador to Egypt Shalom Cohen arrived in Cairo to succeed Elie Shikid who retired in December 2004.

The spokeswoman for the embassy Roth Land said that Cohen arrived on Sunday in Cairo and will submit his credentials shortly to the Egyptian president Honsi Mubarak, noting that the date for submitting the credentials was not set but will be next week.

Before assuming the mission of representing his country to Egypt, Cohen was in charge of presiding over the Middle East department and the peace process in the Israeli foreign ministry.

Cohen, 50 years old, was a chairman for the Israeli mission in Tunis from 1996- 2000 the date when he assumed the mission of the Arab Maghreb department at the Israeli foreign ministry until 2003.

Egypt had recently appointed a new ambassador in Israel, Muhammad Asem, who assumed his mission in March, four years after summoning the former ambassador in protest of the Israeli acts of oppression to the Palestinian Intifada. The Jordanian ambassador returned to Tel Aviv in the same month.

The relations of each Egypt and Jordan with Israel witnessed coolness because of the Palestinian Intifada in 2000 and each of them protested by pulling out its ambassador because of the Israeli aggressions against the Palestinians.

In Sharm al-Sheikh summit which included the Palestinian authority and Israel, each of Jordan and Egypt decided bringing back the two ambassadors to Tel Aviv. Worthy mentioning that Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania are the only Arab states with established diplomatic relations with Israel.
