UN confirms withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 5/24/2005

The UN secretary General Kofi Annan said that the Syrian forces withdrew all its forces from the Lebanese territories in response to UN Security Council resolution 1559 issued in September 2004.

Annan said that the UN mission which was dispatched to verify the withdrawal was able to confirm the withdrawal of the Syrian forces, noting that the reports of the mission was handed over to the UN Security Council, describing the information it contains as positive.

Annan and his special envoy on the Syrian- Lebanese issue Terry Rod Larsen described the result of the report as positive. He told journalists that the UN teams made assurances about all Syrian withdrawals concerning the border area. However, he said that there is still a question over one border area which is Deir al-Ashayer, which is under dispute and has not identified yet because of the dispute on its ownership, and it is still unmarked yet.

The UN military mission verified the full withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon but said it can not make sure that all the intelligence people left the country actually.

The report of the UN team said that all positions used to be used by the Syrian intelligence forces were vacant and based on that it reached the conclusion "that according to its best means there is no existence for the Syrian military men in Lebanon in the familiar areas or in their military costumes."
