Al-Ahram: China supportive to Egypt's nomination to Security Council seat
Egypt-China, Politics, 5/23/2005

China appreciates Egypt's role in the Middle East conflict and efforts to close the Palestinian ranks and build confidence between the Palestinians and Israel, said Assistant Chinese Foreign Minister for West Asia and North Africa affairs.

He told Al-Ahram daily on Monday that China is supportive to the Egyptian efforts to establish security and stability in the Middle East.

He stressed that Beijing is keen to convince the Palestinians and Israelis to abandon violence and return to the negotiating table as the only means to restore stability to the region.

On China's support for Egypt's nomination to a UN Security Council seat, the Chinese official said Egypt is qualified to have a Security Council seat.

On the Sino-Arab relations, the Chinese official said that China is holding the preparations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Sino-Arab relations on which Egypt was the first Arab country to give its diplomatic recognition of China.

In this regard, invitations will be extended to a number of senior Arab officials to attend the celebrations, due mid 2006, as well as holding a meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in Beijing, he said.

China is also mulling to extend invitations to a number of Arab heads of state to attend the celebrations, the Chinese official maintained.

On President Hosni Mubarak's coming visit to Beijing, the official said that no date has been set yet for the visit.
