Meetings in Tripoli to prepare for UMA Summit
Maghreb, Politics, 5/23/2005

Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mohamed Bena•ssa, arrived in Tripoli, Libya, Sunday evening, to take part in the Council of the foreign ministers of the Arab Maghreb Union, know by its French acronym, UMA.

Created in 1989, UMA gathers five north African countries, namely Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia. The Union, however, did not hold a summit since 1994 because of divergences between member States.

The council of foreign ministers is to consider the results of the UMA follow-up committee which opened on Sunday in the Libyan capital to prepare the agenda of the 7th session of the Union Chairmanship Council, due to take place soon in Tripoli.

During the opening session of the committee meeting, representatives of the five states called for up-dating the texts and conventions concluded by UMA members, to keep pace with the changes taking place at the regional and international levels.

The Secretary General of the Union, Lahbib Boularass, said the committee would discuss a number of projects including the creation of a free-trade zone, and of a maghrebin economic grouping, as well as the reinforcement of efforts of locust fighting.
