Muslim Brothers escalated opposition against the Egyptian government, deplore detentions
Egypt, Politics, 5/23/2005
The general guide for the banned Muslim Brothers group Muhammad Mahdi Akef described the political regime in Egypt as living in a state of confusion, vacuum and is cracking.
In an interview with al-Jazeera TV he said that all Egyptian people strata reject the policies of the authorities in Egypt.
Akef's statements came after a series of new acts of detention in the lines of the Muslim Brothers targeted, according to the group more than 20 activists and leading figures including the secretary general Mahmoud Ezzat.
The role of the Muslim Brothers movement increased in the demonstrations which took place at the Egyptian street in recent weeks, together with an increase in the campaign of arrest, ended in the detention of 2500 persons only for May with two thirds of them are still in prison.
The spokesman for the movement, Abdul Jalil al-Sharnoubi considered that the detentions target "freezing the movements of persons who are able to make people in the streets boycott the referendum." He also considered that the acts of detention are but a way to prevent some members of the group from nominating themselves for the next presidential elections. However, these acts were considered by the chairman of al-Ghad party as an "evidence that the regime no longer permit opposition or any demonstration or any right guaranteed by the constitution."
