Israel responds to Qatar's request: supporting its nomination to the UN Security Council
Qatar-Israel, Politics, 5/19/2005
Israel on Wednesday responded to a request by Qatar in its attempt to seek a non-permanent seat for two years at the UN Security Council, although there are no full diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The spokeswoman for the Israeli foreign ministry Omeira Oron said that Qatar asked Israel to support its nomination for a non permanent seat after the Asian states supported the nomination. She continued that "after studying the Qatari request, Israel decided to support the nomination of Qatar for a seat among non-permanent members at the UN Security Council."
Oron said that this is the first time in which Israel supports an Arab state which has no full diplomatic relations with to occupy one of the non permanent seats at the council.
Qatar's ambassador at the UN said that his country talked to all members at the UN on that matter. News reports quoted Qatar's ambassador at the UN Nasser Bin Abdul Aziz al-Nasser as saying that they asked the support of all members of the UN including Israel and that they received positive responses.
