Cairo complains of maltreatment of Egyptian workers in Jordan
Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 5/19/2005

Cairo has expressed its concern over receiving reports that its workers in Jordan are exposed to attacks by the security forces.

The Egyptian minister of foreign affairs Ahmad Abu al-Ghait asked in a message he sent to his Jordanian counterpart Farouk al-Qasrawi on the need to preserve the dignity and rights of the Egyptians in Jordan.

In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry said that Abu al-Gheit stressed in his message that hundreds of Egyptian workers in Jordan demonstrated before the Egyptian embassy in Amman in protest of violations they were exposed to by the Jordanian security forces.

The statement added that "what the Egyptian citizens have been exposed recently in Jordan do not comply with the spirit of brotherly relations linking the two sisterly peoples, stressing the need to work quickly for dealing with this matter."

The statement indicated that the assistant foreign minister for Consulate Affairs and the Egyptian abroad, Muhammad al-Ghabbari, talked with the Jordanian ambassador in Cairo, Omar al-Refai, who denied the existence of a campaign against the Egyptian labor force, noting that these incidents are confined to Irbid area to the north of the kingdom and came as a result of individual and irresponsible behaviors.

The statement said that the Jordanian official stressed to the Egyptian ambassador in Amman that those who made violations against the Egyptian citizens in Jordan will be punished.

In Amman, the official spokesman for the Jordanian general security directorate said that the authorities evacuated 1300 Egyptian workers over violating residency and work conditions in the country, following a tough campaign to organize incoming labor force. Col. Rafaat Haddad said that the security authorities found out 5270 Egyptian workers. He added that these measures come in the course of a tough campaign to organize labor force coming from various nationalities started ten days earlier at the decision of the Jordanian ministry of labor.

Haddad stressed that the campaign does not only target the Egyptian laborers rather implemented against all foreign workers. He explained that the Jordanian authorities give the opportunity for those who correct their situations to work by legalized work permits.
