New phase of relations between Iraq, Iran
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 5/18/2005

The Iraqi foreign minister Hoshiar Zeibari and the Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharzi on Tuesday agreed to close the file of the past and start a new phase of relations between the two countries based on respect and cooperation and non interference in the internal affairs of each other.

In a joint press conference in Baghdad, Kharazi stressed his country's complete readiness to cooperate with Iraq in all security and economic fields and other areas of mutual concern.

Kharazi, the highest Iranian official to visit Iraq since the fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein, vowed that his country will move to prevent fighters from crossing its lands to Iraq.

The Iraqi foreign minister welcomed Kharazi's statements and described the leader of al-Qaida organization in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, as an enemy for Baghdad and Tehran. He said that his government is confident that Iran does not want to have al-Qaida nor al-Zarqawi in Iraq.

For his part, the Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said after his meeting with Kharazi that Iraq has a new strategy in its relations with the neighboring states based on common interests and that he is seeking to have the relations with Iran in its best.

Iraq is fighting to contain the attacks of the fighters which claimed the life of 500 persons since the announcement of the new Iraqi government three weeks ago. Baghdad accuses the neighboring states that they do not make enough efforts to protect their borders.
