Muslim Brothers Join call of Egyptian parties to boycott the referendum
Egypt, Politics, 5/18/2005

The Muslim Brothers group joined the call made by main three Egyptian opposition parties to boycott the referendum to be held on May 25th to approve the constitutional amendment permiting more than one candidate in presidential elections.

The movement's general guide Muhammad Mahdi Akef said in a statement that the text of article 76 of the constitution which was approved by the People's Assembly "devoid the amendment and prevented the existence of a real candidate to the post of the Presidency, except the candidate of the ruling party and provided a worse situation than what was before."

Akef called for a political reform including the abrogation of the emergency law, launching of public freedom concerning the formation of parties, release of newspapers and political detainees and abrogation of special courts and laws.

The delegations of al-Wafd, al-Tajamu' and al-Nasiri announced that its decision to boycott the referendum to amend the constitution is not considered a new bloc against anyone. The parties justified their positions that the ruling national party has persisted to ignore all its demands.

In a joint press conference at the headquarters of al-Wafd in Cairo, heads of the three delegations called for boycotting the referendum and to stay at home this day.

The three opposition parties decided to withdraw from the dialogue with the ruling party over the political reforms operation.
