China to reduce textile exports to Morocco, Minister
Morocco-China, Economics, 5/17/2005

China has set up several measures aiming to self-regulate and limit its exports of textile products, said Monday visiting Chinese vice-minister for Commerce Yu Guangzhou.

At the end of his meeting with Moroccan minister of Industry, Trade and Economy Upgrading, Salaheddine Mezouar, the Chinese official told the press that among the measures his country will take is the implementation of an "export tax," besides an array of "complementary measures."

"China takes into consideration the worries of the Moroccan government and businessmen" about the future of textiles, he said calling for diversifying trade exchanges between the two countries.

As to the Moroccan minister, he said his meeting with the Chinese peer tackled the issue of the under-billing of some Chinese products. He called, in this regard, for putting an end to this "behaviour" that may "perturb the bilateral trade relations."

Morocco suffers a chronic trade deficit to the benefit of China which jumped from MAD 4.35b in 2003 to MAD 6.17b (USD 718m) in 2004.

Yu Guangzhou arrived in Rabat on Sunday for a working visit that aims to consider means of raising the volume of Moroccan exports to China with a view to "cut the deficit of the trade balance" of Morocco with regard to the Asian country.
