Desecration of the holy Quran by US soldiers is severely condemned
Regional-USA, Politics, 5/16/2005

Sheikh of al-Azhar, Sayed Mohammed al-Tantawi, condemned Sunday desecrating the Holy Quran by US soldiers in the U.S. Guantanamo detention camp.

"Profanation of the Holy Quran is a great crime that could not be neglected," Tantawi said in a statement published by Egyptian daily "al-Ahram." Egyptian Muft Ali Jomaa stressed in a statement that "who desecrated the Holy Quran crossed all the red lines and got away from subjectivity." "All divine religions call for respecting religious beliefs and sanctities," the Mufti added.

Newsweek magazine, which initialy pubished the report about the incident, "acknowledging possible errors in the article, stopped short of retracting it," The New York Times reported today.

In Lebanon, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadlalluh severely condemned sacrilege of the Holy Quran by US soldiers, calling upon Moslems as well as human rights organizations all over the world to put an end to such US practices and provocations.
