Iran to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; may walk out of NPT if harassment continues
Iran-European Union, Politics, 5/14/2005
Iran will never abandon its inalienable right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi stressed on Friday, clarifying that his country plans to continue its talks with the EU.
Iranian News Agency IRNA quoted Kharazi as saying "Iran will remain committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and confidence-building measures," "Eclectic and discriminatory approaches can, by no means, solve problems facing the world community," Kharazi said during his meeting with the visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Bin Ahmad Badawi.
Kharrazi reiterated that Iran will not give up its absolute right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
For his part, Badawi voiced Malaysia's support to Iran's right to use nuclear technology within the framework of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Secretary of the foreign policy committee of the Supreme National Security Council in Iran, Hossein Mousavian, the spokesman of Iranian negotiator delegation, said that Iran rejects selectivity in dealing with Iran's nuclear file. "If the IAEA board of governors deals in a selective way with Iran's nuclear dossier, this would be a breach of the NPT," " If the Iranian nuclear dossier is taken to the UN Security Council, Iran may walk out of the NPT," Mousavian concluded.
Meantime, Tehran's Friday prayers substitute leader Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani renewed Iran's right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Addressing Friday prayers worshipers, Kashani criticized the US support to Israel and its policies aiming at interference in Iran's internal affairs. He stressed the necessity of a wide popular participation in the forthcoming elections.
