World Islamic People's Leadership (WIPL) issued yesterday Thursday, a statement on reports about "a heinous crime being committing, regarding the desecration of the scripture of God in Guantanamo base," The official Libyan news agency JANA reported.
The text of the statement is as follows:
Following recent reports by world mass media, on the perpetration of a heinous crime, related to the desecration of the Holy Quran, at the behest of the highest military authorities in Guantanamo base, before the eyes of the prisoners, with a view to humiliate, provoke, and psychological pressurize them as well as to insult their religion, Islam; the practices ranged from tearing and stepping on the Quran and throwing it into toilets,
WIPL has received flood of communications and cables from Islamic organizations, activists and parties from various parts of the world, calling for a serious position to expose such heinous practices, that antagonize one billion Muslims, and affronts the most sacred shrine and taking positions on this matter which are due duty from Islamic perspective and internationally.
While, it condemns such irresponsible attitude, that has no relation to combating terrorism, WIPL warns against the serious repercussions of such immoral acts, and against the fertile ground that it provides for growing the phenomena of extremism and violence, WIPL joins all voices of peace and freedom advocates in the world, who condemned this behaviour, asking the US administration to conduct an immediate investigation into such deliberate insult to Muslims, offer official apologies and present those responsible to justice.
WIPL has also decided to dispatch bro. Louis Farrakhan, the Assistant Secretary of WIPL to Guantanamo detention to meet prisoners, and those responsible to clarify the background of the heinous practices, and ascertain whether they indeed took place.
Meantime, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice condemned alleged acts of disrespect for the holy Quran by U.S. military interrogators at Guantanamo Bay and promised "appropriate action" if the allegations are proven to be true.
"Disrespect for the Holy Koran is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it ever be, tolerated by the United States.Ê We honor the sacred books of all the world's great religions.Ê Disrespect for the Holy Koran is abhorrent to us all," Rice said in a statement she delivered before testifying in Congress May 12.
