Sorour: Constitution amendment historic step
Egypt, Politics, 5/13/2005

Egypt's People's Assembly Speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour said yesterday Egypt will amend the political rights law after the presidential elections slated for September.

The coming stage will witness a radical change in the political life in Egypt through amending this law, Sorour told a private sector company staff in' Sharqeya governorate. Governor Yahya Abdel Meguid attended the meeting.

Sorour reiterated that the emergency law would not be used except for combating terrorism and drug dealers. The parliament on Tuesday approved a proposed amendment of article 76 of the Constitution allowing multi-candidate presidential elections.

The Ministry of Interior will announce at a press conference tomorrow preparations of holding a referendum on amending article 76 of the constitution. The referendum will be held on May 25.
