French goal-keeper gets heavier sanction for spitting at Moroccan ref
Morocco-France, Local, 5/13/2005
The French football federation (FFF) has toughened the sanction handed last April against French goal keeper Fabien Barthez, for spitting at Moroccan referee, Abdallah El Achiri, during a friendly last February between his club and Wydad Casablanca.
The French national squad and Olympic de Marseille goal keeper was banned last April for six months, including a suspended three months. The sentence was extended until December 15. Barthez could resume playing on October 15 provided that he undertakes community service activities.
The stormy match was suspended and Marseille defender Frederic Dehu was sent off after the melee but has been acquitted by the French Football Federation.
FFF chairman who lodged the penalty appeal said Barthez's error "deserved a firm suspension until December 31, 2005."
