Jamal Mubarak confirms Egypt's rejection to the UN monitoring the presidential elections
Egypt, Politics, 5/13/2005

Egypt has refused foreign observers to be imposed on it from the outside for the presidential elections in September. This was in reation to an indirect American call to this effect.

This rejection was expressed by Jamal Mubarak, the elder son for the Egyptian president who said on Thursday in a press conference at the headquarters of the ruling Democratic National Party that his country rejects any foreign attempt to impose a sort of monitoring on the presidential elections.

Jamal Mubarak who occupies the post of the secretary general of policies at the Democratic National Party said that the question of monitoring the presidential elections is an Egyptian matter, decided by the Egyptians the same they had done in the constitutional changes. Jamal Mubrak added that the talks will be held at the Egyptian political circles on the issue of local or international observers, noting that Egypt will take this decision.

The American president George W Bush asked on Saturday that the next Egyptian presidential elections be held in the presence of international observers and rules permitting the launching of a genuine election campaign.

The White House called for paving the way before free election campaigns in Egypt in preparations for the presidential elections. The spokesman for the White House said in a meeting with pressmen that "it is important that the candidates enjoy the opportunity of active elections campaigns and to talk freely about their nomination so as citizens will be able to choose their leaders."
