One joint election list for the Lebanese opposition
Lebanon, Politics, 5/13/2005
In an attempt to settle the current Lebanese election crisis, the Lebanese opposition agreed on Thursday to form joint lists in order to launch the elections due to be held on May 29th.
This came in conclusion of a decisive meeting for the opposition forces that lasted for four hours held amid increasing divisions over the election law and the warnings by the Maronite Church against the elections law circles and the emergence of rising demands to postpone the elections.
Key opposition figures were absent from the meeting including the Druz leader Walid Junblat, former commander of the Lebanese army Michael Aoun and former Lebanese president Amin al-Gemayyel.
As expected, the participants have not adopted an expected program for the elections which will start its first phase on May 29, rather they confined to take part in forming the lists in all areas in Lebanon.
Meantime, the Lebanese prime minister Najib Miqati said that the political decisions in Lebanon will be defined following the parliamentary elections to be held by the end of the current month.
In a statement to al-Jazeera TV on Thursday, Miqati welcomed the UN observers who arrived in Beirut to follow up the elections, but stressed that what is of concern to the government now is to ensure the elections.
For its part, the Maronite patriarchy strongly criticized the law according to which the elections will be held and considered it as a violation of the Taif accord.
