Arab-Latin summit rejects US sanctions on Syria

Arab-Latin America Summit on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the US unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria, stressing that the US "Syria Accountability Act" which imposes sanctions on Syria is a violation of the international law principles.

Presidents and heads of the 34th delegations participating at the Summit concluded the two-day deliberations hailing a Syrian invitation to hold the first forum of the "Arab-Latin America Library" scheduled in Aleppo during next December.

The statement stressed the importance of achieving the just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on the UN relevant resolutions, particularly 242 and 338, Madrid terms of reference and the Arab peace initiative of Beirut.

It called on Israel to withdraw from all occupied Arab territories to the line of June 4th, 1967 and remove all settlements from the Palestinian lands.

Presidents and heads of delegations appealed to all parties concerned to take practical and serious measures to make the Middle East a region free of weapons of mass destruction.

They expressed support to a Syrian initiative submitted to the UN Security Council in 2003 which calls for making the Middle East an area free from WMD.

The statement stressed the necessity of fighting terrorism with all its forms, calling for holding in international conference under the supervision of the UN to tackle this phenomenon and distinguish it from the peoples legitimate right to resistance.

Syrian Prime Minister Naji Otari, for his part, underlined the need to boost ties between Arabs and Latin America as to achieve international stability and security.

"Boosting and cementing ties as well increasing joint consultation and coordination is a need to achieve international stability and security and make economic development that is based on social justice and international law respect," Otari said in a word to the Arab-Latin American summit.

He called to build the multilateral order which is characterized by tolerance and openness on freedom as well as equality stressing that "Syria is committed to every word in the summit declaration pledging and to implement it." He noted to dangerous challenges facing the world the most prominent of which is the great powers hegemony and lack of good development plans.
