Aoun welcomes alliance with Hizbullah, criticizes Junblat
Lebanon, Politics, 5/12/2005
The Lebanese opposition Christian figure Micheal Aoun expressed openly his readiness to maintain an elections alliance with the Hizbullah party and renewed his criticism of the Druz leader Walid Junblat and described him as a "taxi driver."
Aoun who returned back just few days ago from a 15 year exile in France, replied to a question over the possibility of his alliance with sides considered as Lebanese government supporters like Hizbullah by saying "yes, and why not." He said, as a reform movement, he has no objection to cooperate with others on a reform program after the pullout of the Syrian army.
The Lebanese opposition leader said on Wednesday about his meeting with a Hizbullah delegation which came to congratulate him several days ago "They were open and we were also open. We agreed to meet with Nasrullah when conditions permit."
On his position concerning the issue of dismantling the weapons of Hizbullah, Aoun said he prefers to use the word "handing over the weapons," noting that he will seek to convince the party on the role of the defense mission and means of achieving that through building atmospheres of confidence with the Hizbullah party and other Lebanese.
