New clashes in Somalia a problem for government's comeback
Somalia, Politics, 5/9/2005
New clashed erupted in Kesmayo port to the south of Somalia and this forced the Somali prime minister Muhammad Ali Jedi to abrogate a tour he was intending on the city.
The clashes erupted following differences between the warring militias which strongly oppose the visit by Jedi to Kesmayo and the support voiced by others to it.
One official at the office of the prime minister in Nairobi accused Jedi opposition of flaring up the confrontations. But Jedi played down immediately after his return back to Nairobi the significance of the clashes, and said that the reason he did not go to Kesmayo was because he did not have enough time.
The trip of the Somali prime minister to his country was the first he held since he assumed the authority in 2004.
Some 14 persons were killed at least after one explosion targeted a football stadium in Mogadishu, minutes before the speech of the prime minister.
Jedi says he is committed to transfer his government to Somalia by the end of the current month but he considers this will be a hard task without peace keeping forces. He said that "returning back to Somalia especially Mogadishu needs special arrangements and the land is ready and the people are prepared to receive and support the government."
It was also decided to postpone sending forces from Uganda and Sudan to Somalia in order to protect Jedi's administration. But Jedi said he does not expect this postponement to stay long. The governments and foreign donors pressure the Somali government to return back and impose itself. A task which faces difficulties because of the deteriorated security conditions.
