Muslim Brothers guide criticizes Egyptian government
Egypt, Politics, 5/9/2005
The Guide ( Murshid) of the Muslim Brothers group in Egypt, Mahdi Akef, launched strong criticism against the Egyptian government over the detention of members of the group.
In a press conference, Mahdi Akef demanded immediate release of all detainees who were arrested by the security forces "during the regrettable incidents when the security men attacked the nation by all its groups." He held the police and the state responsible for the acts of violence which resulted in killing one persons during the demonstrations of last Friday.
The general guide of the group, with 15 members at the parliament, refused any official recognition by the group for supporting the election of the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for a new term presidential term of office.
This coincided with the announcement by the constitutional committee at the parliament to amend the items of article 67 of the constitution so as to permit more than one candidate to participate in the Presidential elections in September this year.
The general guide called at the Egyptian parliament to reject the amendment draft for not containing enough reform in it.
