Key Muslim Brothers leaders were detained as fears rise of watering down constitutional change
Egypt, Politics, 5/7/2005
Just few hours before the demonstrations, the Muslim Brothers group announced that four of their leading figures were arrested including the leading figure Issam al-Aryan on Friday to be added to other 1562 detainees, according to figures of the Muslim Brothers.
Members of al-Irshad office in the Muslim Brothers group Abdul Menem Abu al-Fotouh said that the protests will continue "even if all members of the Muslim Brothers are arrested" and that cooperation will be made with all opposition trends; Islamists, leftists and liberals.
The Muslim Brothers and other movements in the Egyptian opposition expressed their fears that the amendment of article 76 of the Egyptian constitution will be made meaningless after the legislative committee at the parliament set restrictions for the nomination to the post of the President of the Republic.
The acts of detention came just few days from the readiness of the Egyptian parliament to amend article 76 which allows voting more than one candidate to run for the Egyptian Presidency, while sources in the Egyptian opposition expected the amendments to tighten conditions for nomination. A matter which will weaken the opportunities for the opposition to provide a strong candidate.
