Iraq returns its ambassador to Jordan
Iraq-Jordan, Politics, 5/7/2005

The Iraqi foreign ministry has decided to return its ambassador in Jordan Ata Allah Abdul Wahab to his work place in Amman after six weeks of suspension, in an indication to the end of the political crisis which erupted between the two states on the background of al-Hella explosion.

Relations between the two states worsened after the mass media broadcast celebrations in the Jordanian city of al-Salt as one of its citizens carried out al-Hella explosion, in Iraq, in February which resulted in killed 118 persons.

The ministry said in a statement that summoning on the ambassador was for consultation over the implications of the "terrorist crime of al-Hella." The statement added that the cabinet decided after studying all developments and the positive stances of the Jordanian officials to return back the ambassador to his workplace in Amman.

The ministry indicated correspondents between the Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and his Jordanian counterpart Adnan Badran and the meeting between the Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zeibari and his Jordanian counterpart Farouk al-Qasrawi, on the sideline of Istanbul conference, noting that the two foreign ministers discussed all issues which violate relations between the two states and agreed to deal with it altogether.

The decision of the Iraqi foreign ministry to return back the ambassador comes one day before the visit which is expected to be carried out by the Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani to Jordan at the invitation of the Jordanian king Abdullah II.

Baghdad has recently witnessed angry demonstrations against Jordan in protest of the celebration by some Jordanians commemorating the executor of the al-Hella explosion and considering him as a "martyr." Amman and following these demonstrations which targeted the Jordanian embassy summoned its charge de affairs in Iraq Dimai Haddad. But two days later, the Jordanian king decided to return him back to Iraq in order to end the crisis. Moreover, the King recently criticized local media holding it responsible for the deterioration of relations with Iraq.
