Iran has right to peaceful nuclear energy , minister
Iran-European Union, Politics, 5/4/2005

"Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi .. Tuesday stressed the developing states' right to have access to peaceful nuclear energy for economic development," The Iranian official news agency said today.

"We will keep negotiating with the Europeans to safeguard our inalienable right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes..The Islamic Republic seeks its absolute right through dialogue," the Iranian minister reiterated, IRNA reported.

In a speech to the opening of the seventh Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) May 2, US Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Stephen Rademaker said states that violate their treaty obligations should be denied the peaceful nuclear benefits also provided for in the NPT. The language of the treaty, he said, was Òexplicit and unambiguousÓ in making clear that nations asserting the right to receive the benefits of peaceful nuclear development must also be in compliance with their nonproliferation obligations.Ê All nuclear assistance to states not in compliance should cease, he said.Ê

"We must remain mindful that the treaty will not continue to advance our security in the future if we do not successfully confront the current proliferation challenges," Rademaker said.Ê "Our common obligation is clear.Ê This conference offers us the opportunity to expand our understanding of these critical challenges and to seek common ground on ways to respond."

Meantime, in a separate meeting between Kharrazi and the Kazakh Foreign Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev, "the Kazakh minister expressed his country's support for Iran-EU nuclear talks, saying Kazakhstan regards peaceful use of nuclear energy as the right of the signatories to the NPT including Iran," IRNA reported.
