Younis: Egypt's total power capacity hits 20000 megawatts

"The total power capacity in Egypt has hit 20,000 megawatts, "Minister of Electricity Hassan Younis, adding that a strategy has been drawn up for the power sector from 2007-2022.

The 16-year plan will see the construction of new power generating stations, increasing the country's capacity to 36,000 megawatts.

Younis said in a speech delivered on his behalf by Mohammed el-Gazar, Head of the Water Stations Authority, at the 15th lnternational Conference on Environment Protection that started in Alexandria yesterday.

Younis stressed that the power sector had made use of the most of the River Nile in terms of generating electricity, noting that the stations at the Aswan High Dam, the Aswan Reservoir and the Esna Barrages generate 2,745 megawatts of electricity.

"Wind-generation projects produce 145 megawatts stressed Younis in his statement, noting that two new wind-generation forms are now under construction Zaafarana, Suez Governorate.

The two farms will produce 205 megawatts of electricity.
