On the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 5/4/2005
The Lebanese government on Tuesday finalized a controversy on the issue of the existence of a Syrian position in the Lebanese territories after the withdrawal by confirming that the Syrian camp to the east of the country is built on a Syrian land.
A statement issued by the Lebanese prime minister Najib Miqati said it was notified by the results of the verification made by Lebanese authority stating that the position of the Syrian army in Ceir al-Ashayer and Kafer Qouq is situated inside the Syrian territories, and therefore what had been stated earlier about this matter was not precise."
The Lebanese government on Tuesday announced that the Syrian troops deployment site at the border region of Deir al-Ashayer was set on Syrian lands, not Lebanese. "Lebanese Premier Najib Miqati was informed by the competent security authorities of the preliminary results of inspections on the sites of Syrian troops deployment at the border region east of Deir al-Ashayer and Kfar Kouk," Lebanese National New Agency quoted a statement for Lebanese government as saying.
Earlier Damascus had announced that together with Lebanon it decided to form a joint military committee in order to discuss existence of one position for the Syrian forces, after information were received to that there are Syrian soldiers in the area.
Meanwhile, the UN team in charge of verification the Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon on Tuesday carried out a large scale inspection operation inside four sites in the Bekaa which had been occupied by units from the Syrian army and intelligence.
Worthy mentioning that the team which is led by the Senegal's Maj. Al-Haji Muhammado Kanjo was sent last week by the UN in order to verify the credibility of the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon according to UN Security Council resolution no. 1559 and a report is to be submitted to this effect by the end of the current week.
News reports in Lebanon said that the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine -- General Command evacuated its military positions in Eita al-Fakhar in the Bekaa area to the east of Lebanon.
