Clashes between gunmen and American forces in Iraq

Armed operations continued and escalated with the taking oath ceremony of the first elected Iraqi government since 50 years.
News reports said that gunmen attacked by missile shelling the badly reputed Abu Ghraib jail, which is run by the American army to the west of Baghdad.
The American and Iraqi forces to the south of Baghdad were exposed to attacks adopted by a group called the Islamic army in Iraq.
Al-Ramadi city to the west of the capital witnessed clashes between gunmen and American forces supported by warplanes. These forces said it killed in these clashes in which the Iraqi forces took place some 12 gunmen.
The clashes erupted when gunmen attacked marine forces inspection point in the city. A statement by the American army said that one Iraqi soldier and one civilian were killed and two of its soldiers and two national guards were injured while five gunmen were arrested.
In al-Qaem, the American army announced in a statement the killing of 15 gunmen including 12 suspected to be followers of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in violent clashes against the city, according to the army.
A statement, attributed to al-Qaida organization in Mesopotamia led by al-Zarqawi and issued on the Internet, denied the killing of its members in al-Qaem near the Syrian borders.
In the same context three members of the Iraqi police were killed at the hands of gunmen in three different attacks in Sameraa city to the north of Baghdad.
Six Iraqis were injured including four policemen in a booby trapped car explosion and one explosive on the highway of al-Ghazaleyah area to the west of Baghdad. Al-Qaida organization in Mesopotamia claimed responsibility for the two attacks. In al-Doura, to the south of Baghdad, gunmen killed an official at the minister of water resources while going to his office.
