Morocco elected member of UN Human Rights Commission
Morocco, Local, 4/29/2005

Morocco was elected by consensus, on Wednesday, member of the UN Human Rights Commission for a three-year mandate.

The nomination of Morocco was presented by the African group. The North African country will sit at the commission as of next January.

The UN Human Rights Commission is made up of 35 nations and convenes in ordinary session for six weeks every year in March and April in the Swiss capital city.

More than 3,000 State and NGO representatives take part and attend the meetings of the commission.

A debate is currently going on to reform the commission or to replace it by a Human Rights Council as was suggested by UNSG Kofi Annan in his report titled "In Larger Freedom: Development, Security and Human Rights Essential for all."
