Adoption of year 2000 Lebanese elections law
Lebanon, Politics, 4/29/2005
The Lebanese parliamentary committees meetings dedicated to discuss the elections law could not reach an agreement on this law because because of a lack of a quorum at the parliament hearings, while both the Lebanese supporters and opposition sides exchanged accusations over the responsibility if the failure.
A Lebanese official source said that the failure of the meeting opens the way before adopting the divisions set by the law which was used in the elections of 2000, which gave the parliament majority to parliamentarians who support Syria.
The deputy speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Michael al-Murr who stands in support of Syria and who was moderating the meeting accused certain parliamentarians of foiling the meeting deliberately.
Al-Murr explained that the meeting of the joint committee was opened in the presence of 39 parliamentarians while the "legal number required for convening the meeting is 30." He continued that some opposition parliamentarians and after they asked to make their presentations left the hall which decreased the number of parliamentarians to 15.
For his part, the opposition Christian parliamentarian Butrous Hareb considered that the meeting of the joint committee is a time wasting event "considering that the decision was taken in advance to "adopt the election law of 2000."
