Jordanian fears over the Israeli Dimona nuclear reactor
Regional-Israel, Environment, 4/28/2005
Several establishments and environment experts at the world level warned against the dangers of the Israeli nuclear reactor Dimona.
The Jordanian international expert in the environment affairs, Sufian al-Tell, said that the said reactor consumed since its foundation 1400 tons of crude uranium and is working at twice its capacity at a rate of 16 hours daily instead of 8 and has not been provided with new cooling towers since 1971.
In a lecture at the Jordanian al-Yarmouk university al-Tell indicated that the nuclear items are transported from the reactor and gathered at the center of collecting nuclear spearheads to the north of Haifa. He said that this center is one of five Israeli nuclear centers in addition to that of Dimona.
He said in the lecture under the title "the dangers of nuclear radiation and its impact on the environment" that the reactor which is situated to the west of Jordan constitutes a danger on the neighboring states, noting that radiation that leaks from it might be carried by the winds and kill humans. Al-Tell concluded that Israel might have produced during 4 years and at an average of 100 tons per year, 4 million tones of these wastes of which 42% were official dumped while the other 52% was unofficially dumped.
The Jordanian expert indicated that Israel dumped and is dumping its nuclear waste in occupied Palestine, in the Palestinian territories, the Negev, in Syria in the Golan heights and in Lebanon on the coasts and the south.
