Kefaya ( enough) organizes new demonstration against extension for Mubarak
Egypt, Politics, 4/28/2005
The Egyptian opposition movement Kefaya is intending to organize new demonstrations today in 14 Egyptian governorates during which it will advocate against extension of terms of office for President Hosni Mubarak or for inheriting his son Jamal the authority.
The coordinator of the movement George Ishak said that the aim of the new demonstration is to confirm the demands of the movement to change, reform and end the emergency law, drawing a new constitution for the country and forming an independent judicial committee to supervise the elections.
He stressed that the timing of the demonstration coincides with the discussions of the Egyptian parliament on amending article 76 of the constitution so as to permit the elections of the President of the country by direct and free vote, noting that the movement does not expect these discussions to be concluded in any real constitutional change and called for broadcasting it live on TV so citizens can observe the discussions.
He also confirmed the news that the Egyptian authorities detained on Monday members of the movement while circulating publications calling for taking part in today's demonstrations.
Since December 2004, Kefaya organized several unprecedented demonstrations in Egypt demanding not to extend presidency for President Mubarak who has been in power since 24 years.
The demonstrations coincide with discussions broadcast by the Egyptian TV with President Mubarak along three days in which he postponed his announcement on his nomination for a fifth term of office until article 76 of the constitution is amended.
Mubark said in the last part of these dialogues that he will decide to be nominated or not after the change in article 76 of the constitution. He added he is not in a hurry to make a decision, noting that in case he nominates himself, he will debate an election program that concentrates on "the achievements already made and his vision for the coming years."
