Mubarak-Putin summit deals with peace process, economic and military cooperation

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak held an important session of talks with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin last night at Abdine Palace dealing with the developments in the Middle East, the joint Egyptian Russian cooperation for pushing forward the Middle East peace process and ways of shoring up stability in the region.
The two leaders also discussed a number of important issues mainly the reform of the United Nations, coordinating efforts for confronting international terrorism and evacuating Middle East region of weapons of mass destruction.
They also discussed ways of developing economic, commercial and cultural relations and expanding commercial exchange between the two countries.
EgyptÕs Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul -Gheit underlined the importance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Egypt and his talks with President Hosni Mubarak.
In statements to diplomatic reporters on Tuesday, the Minister said the visit acquires special importance as it is the first of its kind in more than three decades.
He said the visit reflects the Egyptian-Russian interest in pushing ahead relations between the two countries, especially that President Mubarak paid two visits to Russia in 2001 and 2004.
Abul- Gheit also asserted that the visit reaffirmed both countries keenness on boosting cooperation in the various fields.
Egyptian ambassador to Moscow Ra'ouf Saad underlined the importance of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Egypt. He asserted that there were continued consultations between President Hosni Mubarak and his Russian counterpart over various international issues.
The ambassador went on to say that the Middle East region was passing through a critical stage and the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis needed an active role by all those who sponsor the Middle East process.
As regards bilateral relations, the Egyptian diplomat noted that both sides would promote economic cooperation through starting joint ventures.
Meantime, an aide to the Russian president said the meeting between President Mubarak and President Vladimir Putin will focus on how to provide the circumstances needed for implementing the joint cooperation projects with Egypt.
He said Russia intends to reactivate the joint cooperation through the joint governmental committee for commercial, economic, scientific and technological cooperation.
The Russian Presidential aide said Russian GAS Company signed a contract with an Egyptian company for supplying parts of cars for assembling in Egypt.
He said Russian Look Oil is expanding its activity in Egypt adding that it was awarded a concession for investment in the field of petroleum in Egypt.
He said Egypt was and is still an important strategic partner to Egypt, adding that the volume of commercial exchange and the development of the sector of services and tourism have reached nearly 1400 million dollars.
He said the Russian side is looking forward to expanding cooperation in the field of remote sensing.
