Public hearings points out 'Polisario' human rights violations
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 4/28/2005

Several human rights NGOs of the Moroccan Southern towns of Laayoune and Boujdour held, in Laayoune on Tuesday, public hearings on human rights violations perpetrated by "Polisario" in the camps and prisons of Tindouf, South-West Algeria.

Speakers at the hearings told of the barbaric mistreatments inflicted on hundreds of Sahrawis by the separatist "Polisario" movement, that is detaining Sahrawi citizens in the Tindouf camps after they were lured into the desert camps by Polisario propaganda in the morrow of the retrieval by Morocco in 1975 of its Southern provinces.

The Algeria-backed Polisario has been claiming since then the separation of the provinces from Morocco, which got them back from Spain under the Madrid accords signed by Spain, Morocco and Mauritania.

The hearings are shedding light on the torture and inhumane treatment suffered by the sequestrated Sahrawis at the hands of "Polisario," which physically liquidated some the Sahrawis, according to organizers of the hearings. Several former detainees in "Polisario" jails spoke of the dire conditions of their detentions, the torture and mistreatment they were target to, recalling that many detainees were killed under torture and executions. The speakers called for the bringing to justice of "Polisario" torturers for the serious human rights violations they perpetrated against the people sequestrated and imprisoned in the Tindouf camps, and pledged to denounce "Polisario" misdeeds in all international forums.

The hearings were organized by the "Association des victimes de violations de droits de l'homme commises par le Polisario," "Association des parents des sahraouis victimes de la rŽpression dans les camps de Tindouf," "Association de dŽfense des sŽquestrŽs ˆ Tindouf," the La‰youne-based "Association des victimes de la torture commise par le Polisario" the Boujdour-based "Al Amal" association for legality and territorial integrity.
