Morocco, 'fundamental axis' of Spain's foreign policy, Spanish deputy PM
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 4/27/2005

Morocco is a "fundamental axis" of Spain's foreign policy, said upon arrival, in Rabat Monday, Spanish first deputy-Prime Minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.

The Spanish official who Started a two-day working visit to Morocco, said both countries are bound by "historic ties and common interests," and share economic, political and social goals. "we have to take good care of these ties through our bilateral relations, but also in the framework of relations within international bodies."

"It is a great satisfaction to see these ties reinforced by the visit to Morocco of Spain's King and Premier, and by the visit to Spain of HM King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the commemoration of March 11 Madrid attacks," a visit which De la Vega had lauded, in an interview with a Moroccan daily, as "a gesture of solidarity that the Spanish people will never forget."

Moroccan Communication Minister, Spokesman of the government, Nabil Benabdallah, who greeted the Spanish official at the airport, said this visit evidences the warm relations between the two countries, pointing out that it also marks the dynamic atmosphere that prevails between Morocco and Spain, and the shared will to lift these relations to a higher level.

The Spanish official's visit to the North African country was highlighted Tuesday by the Moroccan media which said it would "undoubtedly pave the way for a partnership of a different nature between the two countries, and between Morocco and the European Union, taking account of the challenges in this region in the 21st century."

Among these challenges, explains l'Opinion daily, "those of emigration, an economic, social and human phenomenon that needs to be tackled from an economic and human perspective, and not uniquely from a security angle."

De la Vega is due to discuss today with Morocco's Premier, Driss Jettou, the present state of bilateral relations, and the upcoming high-level Morocco-Spanish meeting, due to convene by the end of 2005 in Spain. She will also meet Benabdallah and the Speaker of the House of Representatives (lower house of the parliament), Abdelwahed Radi before attending in the evening the screening at the National Theatre Mohammed VI in Rabat, the premiere of a Moroccan-Spanish documentary film titled "Hanan, from Morocco to Galicia)."
