Putin's visit to Israel, Palestine
Palestine-Russia, Politics, 4/27/2005

After his visit to Egypt, Putin will move to Israel in a visit which lasts for two days during which he holds talks with the Israeli officials. Analysts say that Moscow's good relations with "Israel's enemies" in the region might warp its shadow on the visit.

Observers expect Israel, whose one quarters of the population is of Russian descend, will pressure Putin to severe the developing nuclear and military relations with Iran and Syria.

On the other side, it is expected that Putin will ask Israel to hand over Russian businessmen including the media mogul Vladimir Josenski and the former executive director of the Russian Yukos company Leoned Nevislin who live in Israel and face legal charges in Russia.

Worthy mentioning that the former Soviet Union established relations with Israel after its foundation in 1948 but severed these relations after the war of 1967. But Moscow resumed relations with Tel Aviv in 1991 a short time before the Soviet Union was desolved and after the Soviet president at that time, Michael Gorbachove, permitted Jews to migrate to Israel.

Putin concludes his visit to the region by making talks with his Palestinian counterpart in Ramullah city in the West Bank expected to concentrate on the peace process and the Russian role to give it a push forward.

Worthy mentioning that Russia is a member in the Quartet and does not play a role so far, but a secondary role in the peace process.
