Moroccan candidate to British House of Commons
Regional-UK, Local, 4/26/2005

Rezouk Boufass is the first Moroccan to stand as a candidate for a seat in the House of Commons (Lower Chamber of the British parliament).

He said that his candidacy aims at filling the vacuum due to the Arab absence on the political scene.

The 50 year-old politician arrived in Great Britain in 1974 where he worked in hotel and restaurant sectors.

Father of three, he created with other Arab intellectuals and businessmen a new party labelled "Civilisation party," of which he is the only candidate for the May 5 general elections in Great Britain.

The Arab community, which boasts some 800,000 people, has an important economic role, but its political presence is marginal, Boufass told MAP bureau in London, stressing that the "Civilisation Party" works to defend the Arab community rights.

He noted that Regent Park and North Kensignton electoral districts, where he is candidate, boast respectively 13,000 and 15,000 voters from Moroccan origin.

The Civilisation Party has a varied program tackling the Arab community social, cultural and economic problems.

The party defends also the Palestinian cause and calls for ending the occupation of Iraq and all kinds of abuses perpetrated in the name of war against terrorism.

Besides Boufass, two other Arabs are running for the elections: Egyptian Wassif Mustapha and Palestinian Mohamed Abdelhak; both of them from the Conservative party.
