Security source: Egyptian authorities released four Muslim Brothers members
Egypt, Politics, 4/25/2005

An Egyptian security source said that the authorities released four members of the banned Muslim Brothers group in Egypt among other 28 who were detained on Saturday.

The source said that the four were released by a guarantee and the others are still held until the end of interrogation. The spokesman for the Muslim Brothers said that the four persons were released on late Saturday evening.

The Egyptian security forces detained the group members after their participation in a conference held in Tanta, to the north of Cairo on Friday, in which the participants called for ending the state of emergency in the country as well as for the freedom to form political parties.

Calls demanding reforms increased in recent months after the announcement made by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak of a proposal to amend the constitution to allow competition over the post of the President among more than one candidate in direct elections.

The group said that the authorities detained more than 200 of its supporters in March over their attempt to organize a protest claiming reforms. However, security sources said that the security forces detained more than 100 persons and only 38 of them are still detained.

Since a long time, the opposition parties and groups demand the abrogation of the state of emergency which gives the Egyptian security forces vast detention authorities. The emergency law was applied in Egypt since the assassination of the Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat in 1981.
