Mubarak addresses 2nd army in Ismailia
Egypt, Politics, 4/23/2005
President Hosni Mubarak visited on Saturday the 2nd army headquarters in Ismailia and addressed officers and soldiers on the occasion of the start of celebrations marking Sinai Liberation Day.
Mubarak said April 25, the day marking the liberation of Sinai, brings back memories of restoring such a precious part of Egypt's soil after a 15-year occupation.
He said commemorating such a day is most suitable among the armed forces soldiers who play a key role in protecting the homeland and peace.
The President pointed out that celebrations of Sinai Liberation are held this year in the city of Ismailia in recognition of the prominent role played by the Suez Canal and its cities throughout the history of Egypt.
President Mubarak also said the liberation of Sinai was the fruit of the peace initiative launched by late President Anwar Sadat, stressing that the decision was as brave as that of the war.
The step imposed a new equation for the Arab-Israeli conflict and the entire Middle East situation, he said, pointing out that it had paved the way for just, overall and lasting peace without giving up one inch of Egyptian soil or the steadfast stances endorsing the Palestinian cause.
Mubarak pointed out that the liberation of Sinai paved the way to a new phase in the history of Egypt, referring to liberalization of politics, the national economy and fight against terrorism.
Sinai, which was restored to Egypt as mountains and vast desert, has become today a symbol of peace and a witness to achievements in various domains in terms of infrastructure as well as production and services sectors, the President said.
He asserted that Egypt can never live away from issues in the region and will never stop its support to the Palestinian people and their just cause.
Mubarak pointed out to a breakthrough that brings back hope in re-launching the peace process in a historical opportunity, hopefully to be seized by all regional and international parties.
The President also reiterated that Egypt's efforts would continue in support for the Palestinian issue for realizing stability in the Middle East.
Mubarak also hailed late President Anwar Sadat, the hero of war and peace, who was the victim of terrorism and extremism and did not live to see Sinai liberated, expressing best wishes for prosperity and peace for Egypt and the Egyptian people.
