Moroccan NGO presses on for restitution of embezzled public funds
Morocco, Politics, 4/22/2005
The Moroccan organization for the protection of public funds sent on Wednesday a letter to the House of Representatives requesting the creation of an independent truth commission on the restitution of embezzled public funds.
The letter was made public during a sit-in observed by the organization in front of the parliament in Rabat.
The body also asks for "generalizing investigations to all of the public and semi-public institutions" particularly those in which the state injected funds to save them from bankruptcy.
As a non-governmental organization, the organization says its goal is to "consolidate the role of institutions in the protection of public funds against squandering."
The demo was staged as the Moroccan government unveiled a six-point anti-corruption plan that includes the creation of a body in charge of following up corruption cases and the consolidation of transparency in state procurements, as well as developing follow-up, control and internal auditing mechanisms within the administrations.
