Moroccan government unveils anti-corruption action plan
Morocco, Politics, 4/21/2005

The Moroccan government unveiled on Wednesday a new action plan to struggle against corruption.

Communication minister and government's spokesman, Nabil Benabdallah, said the six-point plan is based on reforming the law on the declaration of property in order to ensure a better respect of the text when an official is appointed to a top position.

The plan also includes enacting the law on money laundering and the law on judgment enforcement.

Another measure is the creation of a body in charge of following up corruption cases and the consolidation of transparency in state procurements, as well as developing follow-up, control and internal auditing mechanisms within the administrations.

Benabdellah also announced that administrative procedures will be eased with the National Identity Card, car registration certificates and driving licenses to contain all personal information, making it unnecessary to have other administrative documents such as birth and residence certificates.

The adoption of electronic administration is among the other measures that will facilitate citizens' access to administration and alleviate the burden of administrative procedures and ward off corruption attempts.

Likewise, the plan will be supported by a public awareness endeavor.

The government adopted last March 31 the UN convention against corruption, which Morocco had signed in October.
