Jordan-Israel, Politics, 4/21/2005

The Jordanian prisoners on whom Israel announced their release on Sunday will arrive today in Amman.

A diplomatic source in Amman said that the liberated prisoners will arrive at al-Lenbi border crossing today morning, but he explained that two out of the nine released detainees decided to stay in the West Bank.

The Jordanian government welcomed Israel's decision to release the prisoners and stressed it will continue making efforts in order to ensure the release of other Jordanian detainees.

The Jordanian foreign minister Farouk al-Qasrawi considered that the decision is a step in the right direction towards releasing all prisoners Amman asks for releasing.

The general Israeli radio said that this measure constitutes a "good intention initiative" by Israel, dispatched to the Jordanian king Abdullah II.

The Jordanian king has met in Amman on Tuesday the Israeli army chief of staff Gen. Moshe Yaloun, according to the Jordanian official news agency which gave no further details.

Jordan demands the release of 25 Jordanian prisoners held in the Israeli jails over security issues, including four who were sentenced to life imprisonment before finalizing the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel in 1994. Israel also detains 50 Jordanians convicted in crimes or over long illegal stay in Israel.
