The Lebanese celebrate Qana anniversary
Lebanon, Politics, 4/19/2005
The Lebanese yesterday celebrated the 9th anniversary of Qana massacre which front-paged news in April 1996 when it was exposed to Israeli planes and artillery bombardment.
The Lebanese President Emile Lahoud stressed in a speech he delivered on this occasion that the Qana massacre anniversary contributed to revealing the true face of Israel since its very existence in the region, based on expansion, violence and fabricating seditions and conspiracies.
In a statement issued by the Lebanese presidency, Lahoud said that blood of martyrs who fell in Qana whose annual anniversary falls on Monday has been converted into a yeast for steadfastness and confrontations.
Lahoud considered that the Qana massacre and its reflections gave an additional confirmation on Israel's continued violations of UN resolution and all international terms of reference and ignoring the legitimate rights of peoples of the region and the justness of Arab causes.
The Israeli bombardment of the border Lebanese town, situated to the south of Sidon, resulted in killing more than 100 refugees and injuring other hundreds who were inside a UN base within an operation called than "grapes of wrath." The victims resorted to a building for UNIFIL fleeing the fire of the occupation forces bombardment of the town.
The Israelis described this massacre as just a regrettable mistake. However, the UN which investigated the incident carried out by a Dutch army general, said in its report that the bombardment was most likely deliberate.
