Syria-Russia, Politics, 4/19/2005

Syria and Russia on Monday stressed interest in developing cooperation in all domains, particularly in the field of media.

In a meeting with a parliamentary and media Russian delegation headed by Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group 'Russia and the Islamic World: Strategic Dialogue' Shamel Sultanov, Syria's Minister of Information Mahdi Dakhlallah reviewed cooperation between Syria and Russia, pointing out to the principles incorporated in the Moscow Declaration issued by the latest summit between Presidents Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin which constituted a base for international relations based on legitimacy, dialogue and real direction towards peace and equality.

The minister said pressures are exercised on Syria because of its anti-war stances and advocate of just and comprehensive peace as well as the supremacy of the international law.

He also reviewed the development and reform process in the country, stressing the role of media.

For their part, members of the delegation underscored their country's care for developing relations with Syria, pointing out to the importance of boosting the role of Syrian media in Russia.

They also noted that there are different lobbies on the Russian arena, asserting the importance of cementing the Syrian influence through opening media and cultural centers in the Russian capital.
